Civil War Baltimore was a divided city, in a divided state in a divided nation.

The city witnessed the first bloodshed,"at the Pratt Street Riot" of the conflict, as Federal troops marching along its waterfront on the way to protect Washington were confronted by southern sympathizers. As a result, it’s became an occupied city, with gun batteries on Federal Hill turned toward its populace.

Meanwhile, the State of Maryland became a strategic battleground. Antietam was the bloodiest single day battle during the war, and later in the war, Union forces turned back the Confederate attempt to take Washington at Monocacy.

To visit Baltimore and to follow Maryland’s Civil War Trails is to see how this story unfolded and to feel its lingering aftermath. The Baltimore Civil War Experience Pass takes you on a journey through this turbulent time and the conflict that gave America a "new birth of freedom" and is a great way to begin your exploration of the places and stories of the Civil War. It includes admission to four museums and their special exhibitions:

The Baltimore & Ohio Railroad Museum, The War Came by Train, featuring the largest collection of Civil War locomotives and never-before-seen artifacts.

The Maryland Historical Society, Divided Voices, Maryland in the Civil War, takes you back to 1861 with a combination of 3D videos, interactive exhibits and story tellers.

Mount Clare Museum House, Personal Accounts of the Civil War Experience, exploring the stories of the people who witnessed the war, both North and South.
